The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation has contracted with CGIT to redefine the flood-prone areas for Montgomery and Giles Co., and Radford city, Va., through the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s map modernization program. The objective of this project is to develop a digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) and Flood Insurance Study for the mentioned counties and city.

The floodplain redelineation process uses new topographic data with existing hydraulic model results in order to generate more accurate flood boundaries. These updated flood boundaries are published as a new set of FIRMs. These insurance maps are used by FEMA, flood insurance companies, and local representatives to identify flood risk areas and determine correct insurance premiums.
