CGIT wins 2019 Governor's Award for Transportation Safety
Virginia Tech's Center for Geospatial Information Technology received the 2019 Governor's Award for Transportation Safety in the category of Innovation in Highway Safety. This was the first year for the innovation category. The award was formally presented to CGIT on May 22 in Roanoke at the 2019 Virginia Highway Safety Summit.
The award recognizes CGIT and CEE collaboration, with the named individuals for the Award being: Kitty Hancock (PI), Peter Sforza (Co-PI), and Joe Newman. Dr. Hancock and Peter Sforza are co-PI's on he project since 2011, which has brought in over $1.7M+ in funding for this project alone.
This award recognizes CGIT's efforts of standardizing and geocoding every recorded vehicle crash in the state of Virginia since 2011. Using this data CGIT has produced a myriad of reports and analyses so local jurisdictions can focus their resources on making hazardous areas safer.
